Unit 1: Nature of Science

Task 1:  Syllabus and Science Safety Contract (1/09/24)

Please read through the Syllabus linked below, so you know the expectations for Science class and what material we will cover throughout the year.  

Next, you will need to print off and read through the Science safety contract located next to the syllabus.  Both you and a parent/guardian will need to sign the safety contract for you to be allowed to participate in any labs we conduct throughout the year.

Task 2:  Title Page of Your Notebook.  (1/09/24)

Create a Title Page that looks something like mine below in your Science Composition notebook.  The title of the unit must be the same as mine, but you can change the images.  Fold the corner of the page or add a sticky note of some kind to mark this page in your notebook.  

Task 3:  "What is Science?" Notes (1/10/24)

Print out a copy of the note packet from the link below.  Tape both pages of the notes separately into your Science composition notebook.

Task 4:  Identifying Facts, Hypotheses, Theories, Laws, and Beliefs.  (1/10/24)

Grab a copy of the  Identifying Facts, Hypotheses, Theories, Laws, and Beliefs paper from the front of the classroom or print out your own copy by clicking on the image of my notebook to the right.  Decide if each example on the paper is a Fact, Belief, Theory, Law, or Hypothesis. 

Task 5:  Scientific Method Notes (1/11/24)

Task 6:  EdPuzzle: Science in Action (1/11/24)

Click the button below for your class period to watch the video on the process of identifying a new species.  Make sure you answer all of the questions as they pop up during the video.  

Task 7:  Paper Airplane Experiment (1/11/24)

Follow all of the instructions on the document linked to the right to set up your notebook and complete the paper airplane experiment.

Task 8:  Parts of an Experiment Notes (1/12/24)

Constants and Variables Notes

Task 9a:  EdPuzzle: Controls, Constants, and Variables (1/12/24)

Click the link below for your class period to access the EdPuzzle video.  Make sure you answer all the questions and read all the prompts that pop up during the video.  

Task 9b:  Identifying Independent and Dependent Variables (1/12/24)

Grab a copy of the Identifying independent and Dependent Variables worksheet from Mr. Tanner or print out your own copy by clicking on the image of my notebook page.  There are nine different experiments listed on the paper.  For each one you will need to highlight/circle the Independent Variable in Green, and the Dependent Variable in Blue.  Each experiment has only one Independent Variable and One Dependent Variable

Task 10:  Constants, Variables, and Control Groups Assignment (1/17/24)

Click the button below for your class period to open the assignment in Google Classroom.  When you have completed the assignment turn your work in to Google Classroom

Task 11:  Analyzing and Interpreting Graphs (1/17/24)

Click the button below for your class period to open the assignment in Google Classroom.  When you have completed the assignment turn your work in to Google Classroom.

Task 12:  Graphing Your Own Data (1/18/24)

Click the button below for your class period to open the assignment in Google Classroom.  Use the Data in the third attachment to fill out your own spreadsheet.  You will then need to graph your data.  Watch the YouTube video below to learn how to make graphs using Google Sheets. 

Task 13:  Intro to Science Group Project (1/19/24)

Click the document below and download your own copy.  You can then open the document with Kami to answer the questions.  If you aren't comfortable using Kami you will need to print out your own copy to fill out.  

Task 14:  Fan Carts and Force Gizmos

Click the button below to open the assignment in Google Classroom.  Read all of the instructions on Google Classroom as that will teach you how to log in to your explore learning account.  You will need to open the Explore Learning link and the Google Form assignment.  You will use the Fan Carts and forces gizmo to help you answer all the questions on the Google Form. You can retake the google form until you score 100%.

Task 15:  Measurement Notes

Read through the slideshow and use the information to complete the notesheet.  You can click the image of my notes to get your own copy of the notesheet.

Task 16:  Measurement Lab Stations (1/23/24)

(This assignment must be done in class)  Click the link below for your class period to open the assignment.  For each lab station you will fill out the data on the Google Doc.  Make sure all your numbers contain the appropriate unit.  

Task 17:  Measuring Volume and Triple Beam Balance Gizmos (1/24/24)

Click the Image to the right to log in to your Gizmos account.  You will need to log in as a student using your teacher's username.

Your password will be your StudentID/Lunch Code

Task 18:  Measurement Summary Table

Get a copy of the notes from Mr. Tanner or click the image of my notes to get a copy of the document.  Tape it into the next blank page of your notebook.   Fill out the summary table to use as a resource during any tests.  

Task 19:  Scientific Notation

Watch the video below to learn how to write in scientific notation.  Then click the button to open the google form and complete the practice assignment.  You can edit your responses until you have earned 100%.
